Our Spring Term Ocean Explorer Group finished their programme, with trips to the North Devon Hospice Charity Shop, Chapel Woods and Woolacombe Dunes.
Students learnt all about the environmental cost of fast fashion, before touring the North Devon Hospice warehouse to see what happens to the donations that are brought in. They saw the online auction team in action, working hard to raise money for the charity and they got a chance to browse the shop, where they found some great second hand clothes and furniture. Many resolved to explore second hand options rather than buying new to help save the environment (and a lot of money!).
At Chapel Woods, students made a sound map of everything they could hear whilst sitting quietly in the woods. They then learnt how to use apps to identify birdsong and used loupe lenses to examine woodland plants in more detail. Our explorers had taken some wooden figures home to decorate, ready for the challenge of taking photos of their mini people out enjoying nature. Creativity and exploration were abundant and our explorers took some amazing pictures!
The programme finished with a session helping the National Trust ranger team at Woolacombe Dunes. Students were taught how to safely use loppers and saws to help clear an area of blackthorn that was encroaching on the sandunes. Dunes are the fastest declining habitats in the UK and must be protected, as they are home to many rare and endangered species. To finish the session, students reflected on everything they have learnt as part of the programme and learnt about volunteering opportunities and careers in conservation.
A few students had made things from recycled tent material in their spare time; Lilly-May fashioned a beautiful bow and Kymani created a brilliant bag. Poppy did a beach clean one weekend and utilised the plastic she found in a poignant piece of art.
The group really impressed Libby from Earth Action (formerly Plastic Free North Devon) with their engagement in this programme and we sincerely hope they will continue their involvement in community conservation activities.
