IMPORTANT UPDATE: School closing at 12:30 on Weds 24 June and 12:30 on Thurs 25 June, due to severe heat weather warning

23rd Jun 2026

Following updated guidance received today, the weather warning for Thursday has now been escalated to a Red Weather Warning due to the forecast extreme temperatures and associated risks.

Over the two days, we have implemented a range of measures to support students and staff, including additional hydration breaks, access to shaded areas and adjustments to planned activities. However, whilst we will continue to take these steps, I have a responsibility to follow health and safety advice, which must remain our paramount consideration.

In addition to closing the school from Wednesday at 12:30pm, I have also taken the decision to close the school from 12:30pm on Thursday in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff.

Students who are eligible for Free School Meals will be able to get a grab-and-go lunch during first break.

SCHOOL TRANSPORT

We have now received confirmation regarding transport arrangements. All transport will run at the earlier finish time apart from the PILT 006 service, which will not be operating.

Students who normally travel on a Stagecoach bus will need to use a public Stagecoach service with their bus pass. These services can be accessed from the bus stops at the bottom of Chaddiford Lane (Braunton Road) or from Barnstaple Bus Station.

If these arrangements cause any difficulty or concern, please contact the school as soon as possible so that we can provide support where needed.

We appreciate that this decision may cause inconvenience for some families. However, the escalation to a Red Weather Warning means that we must take a cautious approach and prioritise the health, safety and welfare of our school community.

Please can we also remind families that, during this period of hot weather, students should continue to come to school with a refillable water bottle, appropriate sun protection and, where appropriate, suncream.

If you have any concerns or require support with arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact the school via email at admin@pilton.college.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
