A team of Pilton surfers had a great day at the North Devon School's Surfing Championships last week. The conditions were challenging at first, as the waves were very small in the morning with a strong offshore wind. As the competition progressed though, the surf got bigger, the wind dropped and the sun came out, meaning everyone really enjoyed their afternoon surfing.
The Pilton boys, Jack and Tom, started the day with their individual heats. They both surfed their waves well and Tom made it through to the semi finals, very impressive for a year 7!
Next it was the turn of Isla and Erin in the girls individual competion. They both worked very hard to find waves and each caught an impressive number in their heats. Isla made it through to an exciting final, where she finished 4th overall against some strong competition!
Our Tag Team enjoyed the fast and furious afternoon event, which involved running into the water, paddling out quickly, catching a wave and surfing it as well as they could, before running back to tag their next surfer.
Part of the day involves an environmental challenge and our Pilton Team (spearheaded by Sophie, Tansy and Christina) won this with their entry highlighting the environmental consequences of littering. The challenge was sponsored by Dryrobe and therefore the whole Pilton Surf Team came away with their own dryrobe as a prize!
If any students want to progress their surfing over the summer, Croyde Surf Club meet at 6pm every Monday night (except for August) and welcome new surfers of all abilities.
