Last week 15 Year 11 boys headed to West Buckland to take on several other schools for the final time as Pilton rugby players.
They did tremendously well in group games against West Buckland, Park and Torrington before narrowly losing out in the final seconds of a play-off game against Chulmleigh.
Highlights included tries from the elusive Ake Nyathi and muscular Martin Eschle, while captain Rex Hibbard set an example with a physical display. Along with Ake the tight five forwards, Lenny Lake, Mark Norman, Louis Fabre and Will Argent set a solid base at the scrum for fly half Nathaniel Baird to get the backs going. Centre Matthew Jones showed off his powerful running while speedsters Reuben Wheelhouse, Blake Robins and Brad Jenkins stretched the opposition defences. Every player tackled bravely, led by back rowers Alfie Rafford and Mason Gard, with centre Oliver Jones solid in midfield. Hopefully we’ll see several of them taking the field for Barnstaple Colts and senior teams in the years after they leave Pilton!
