Language Specialism…
As a Specialist Language College our mission statement is:-
- To become a centre of excellence in North Devon, providing support and encouragement for learners of all ages to develop their language skills.
- To broaden and expand the teaching of modern languages by exploring innovative and creative strategies which enable learners of all abilities to maximise their potential.
- To ensure a seamless transition in language learning from primary level (KS2) through to tertiary level (KS5) by working closely with feeder primary schools and post 16 partners.
- To broaden the horizons of our students by breaking down the rural isolation of North Devon and encouraging international communication through an extensive programme of exchanges and overseas visits.
The school is a Specialist Language College which has enhanced the already excellent teaching in this curriculum area (see pupil outcomes in French and German at GCSE). More importantly, it has allowed the school to engage in activities which have an international dimension (pupil visits, teacher/pupil exchanges work with an international dimension across the curriculum) which has raised aspirations and the horizons of pupils. After five years of Specialist College status, the impact of our work as a Language College is clearly evident across the school and community we serve. The focus of our community work relates to transition at KS2/3 and KS4/5. Figures from Petroc indicate that over twenty former Pilton pupils have chosen to study Advanced MFL Courses Post 16 - going against national and local trends. We are excited by the plans of Petroc to introduce International Baccalaureate in 2010 - this will strengthen progression routes for our modern linguists. Our MFL partnership with Braunton School has proved to be particularly successful, including teacher exchanges, joint visits and enrichment opportunities for KS4 pupils.
